The hair itself is covered with scale-like plates called epicuticles which are an extremely flattened modification of keratinized epidermal cells. The lines of the epicuticles running transversely and at regular intervals identify this as head hair.

The shape of a cross-section of hair varies depending on the type of hair. Straight hair has a round profile while curly hair has a kidney-shaped cross-section.
