MH 024 Mesentery

Loose Connective Tissue

Many organs are suspended within the peritoneal cavity by mesenteries. They are examples of loose (areolar) connective tissue.

Mesentery is bounded on their upper and lower surfaces by a simple squamous epithelium (the mesothelium) supported by a thin layer of collagen fibers.

Observe how the following are supported by loosely scattered collagen fibers within the mesentery:

  • - the largest component of loose connective tissues. The cells appear empty as lipids are extracted during tissue preparation.
  • Blood Vessels - an and are present along with many .
  • - recognizable by the "wavy" appearance of individual nerve fibers.
  • - basophilic because of the large number of small lymphocytes.
