MH 094 Parotid

Eosinophils

Eosinophils trigger or maintain inflammatory and immune responses. They contribute to combating infections by multicellular parasites and inflammatory reactions.

This parotid has immune infiltration in the of connective tissue.

  • - oval-shaped cells with eosinophilic secretion granules (bright pink/magenta) in their cytoplasm
  • - small cells with nuclei of mostly heterochromatin (dark purple)

Eosinophils in connective tissue can be identified by their large, ellipsoid granules with a linear, crystalline core by transmission electron microscopy. See EM 161 Eosinophils.
